Chris Wormell

Christopher Wormell is the celebrated printmaker whose illustrated books are collected and loved throughout the world.

Born in 1955 in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, Chris had no formal training as an artist, working as a road-sweeper, rubbish collector, postman, and a factory worker. An interest in landscape painting led him to buy a set of wood engraving tools in 1982, and to teach himself how to use them.

His first children’s book, An Alphabet of Animals, won the prestigious Ragazza Prize at the Bologna International Children’s Book Fair and has been reprinted in numerous editions.

He has published some 14 illustrated books and acted as illustrator of other's work on at least 18 more. These include Mowgli's Brothers, Blue Rabbit and Friends, Blue Rabbit and the Runaway Wheel, Animal Train, Off to the Fair, and George and the Dragon. In 1993 Two Frogs won a Smarties bronze medal.

In 2004 Chris was the recipient of the New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Children's Book Award for Teeth, Tails, and Tentacles.

His work has also been published as greetings cards and he designed the artwork for a series of advertisements for Adnams, a regional brewer based in Suffolk. Chris lives in London with his wife and three children.
